<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sara Lamb and I decided to collaborate. We’d each
weave a scarf using re-purposed cashmere yarn that my mother and I un-knitted
from over 200 cashmere sweaters.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">During the last 5 years of my mother’s life, she was unable
to knit. Seeking an engaging yarn project for her, I hit upon the idea of
un-knitting old cashmere sweaters. Over a 5 year period of time, we un-knitted
over 200 cashmere sweaters (I just found out the term “tinking” is knit spelled
backwards). I have used this reclaimed yarn as weft to create sumptuous
scarves, shawls and blankets. Many of the sweaters are white, and the white
yarn has rested in a basket waiting patiently for Sara Lamb, master dyer! Many
of you know the current popularity of painted warps and skeins, but you may not
know that Sara was painting yarn 25 years ago and is surely in the inspiration
of the current trend.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sara dyed yarn from the white sweaters using reds,
golds and blues of a sunset as inspiration.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I sent 16 skeins to Sara, and she divided the yarn in half.
She wound her portion of the yarn to use as warp and left mine in skeins to use
as weft. Dye, Dye, Dye…And then the exciting part for me, Weaving, Weaving,
Weaving! I wove my scarf on my Saori loom using the clasped weft technique. I
don’t have a picture of Sara’s finished scarf to show you.</span></div>

Yarn Growth). First I weave something from my stash, and then I buy some new
yarn for my next project, then use yarn from my stash….etc. You get the
picture. I recently saw an inspiring picture on the FB Saori Weaving page, a
mouth-watering silk weft/cotton warp poncho. I had a just enough cotton warp
left on my Saori loom to weave a scarf. It had never occurred to me to
weave with silk on the Saori loom. In fact, I hadn’t woven with silk in this
century!</span><br />

the silk stash. At the bottom of the basket, I discovered a bag of silk bits,
slightly longer than thrums, but an extra warp end here and a leftover
ping-pong ball size snippet there. Some of this yarn dates back to
the mid seventies! Most of it is custom ikat-dyed by at least a
dozen different dyers, Cheryl Kolander of <a href="http://www.aurorasilk.com/"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Aurora Silks</span></a> and Michele

I wanted something that would also appeal to spinners, knitters, basket-makers, anyone really. I came up with a workshop I called “Finding the Color Within”.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6991633531380765462" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxj2yoDBWD1Rbgib-Tq3JQI1kYTTSFoaxfC7E93Q0EmZtpDvw2zDcChrm5fi7NyfCHoBOCRX5N_Aaq-Y3TnKxNLr131K2pqYYjpqUo-ZtzQdMzwzwx4eq8p0CpNuH5ufnQk68pTJpfrgw/s1600/23.Finding-the-Colors-Within-at-Whidbey-300x225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="225" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxj2yoDBWD1Rbgib-Tq3JQI1kYTTSFoaxfC7E93Q0EmZtpDvw2zDcChrm5fi7NyfCHoBOCRX5N_Aaq-Y3TnKxNLr131K2pqYYjpqUo-ZtzQdMzwzwx4eq8p0CpNuH5ufnQk68pTJpfrgw/s1600/23.Finding-the-Colors-Within-at-Whidbey-300x225.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Since my focus is color, I wanted to create a workshop that would strengthen creativity and to free up color experimentation. Here are some examples of those first woven collages.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I taught a bunch of workshops– even one at Convergence in Vancouver.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After I moved back to Montana, I taught, what I now call Woven Paper Collage, at Living Art and several other places around Missoula.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of my longtime pleasures is the creation of whimsical wall pieces woven from the dried remains of summer garden splendor.</span><br />

old kimonos. Pieces of silk fabric would be wadded up to form a ball, and
then the wad would be wrapped with strips of fabric. As time passed,
traditional temari became an art, with the functional stitching becoming more
decorative and detailed, until the balls displayed intricate embroidery. Temari
became an art and craft of the Japanese upper class and aristocracy, and
noblewomen competed in creating increasingly beautiful and intricate objects. Rather than follow an intricate pattern, well, there is no
pattern—hence the “drunken”.</span><br />

I realize I haven't been keeping up, but it was either weave or blog. You know what won. Here is how I often wind an "Almost Ikat" warp. (lots of small bouts which I can arrange once I am at the loom)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMrUwLgqG8FFHdH2DIptzig5j6DG4fphEnvgy4SPLPF98UJjMf4nW1MabF2tfPmRCV4AZ5wtmWqBwUz_ygw0xcGJqE4D8R3ZXFzV8SGqVDdzmjyOhbjHfrIfwYFwvyakcHwp2rUs6yX4o/s1600/more-scarves-025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMrUwLgqG8FFHdH2DIptzig5j6DG4fphEnvgy4SPLPF98UJjMf4nW1MabF2tfPmRCV4AZ5wtmWqBwUz_ygw0xcGJqE4D8R3ZXFzV8SGqVDdzmjyOhbjHfrIfwYFwvyakcHwp2rUs6yX4o/s1600/more-scarves-025.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is most interesting to me to watch the design unfurl<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6OCzs8qJY2dO8PQhb31tvbKtyBkQCpbqq-hlhBboO4_sg9iX8rMwu23XzJQkr12wBJg-haJGhQr5xqtL6tfMeW4LMNjASkuKNYwRrGdmSsWhTXA0HXL1XKkNpVh27eVOZD7UP4er0UKA/s1600/more-scarves-027.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6OCzs8qJY2dO8PQhb31tvbKtyBkQCpbqq-hlhBboO4_sg9iX8rMwu23XzJQkr12wBJg-haJGhQr5xqtL6tfMeW4LMNjASkuKNYwRrGdmSsWhTXA0HXL1XKkNpVh27eVOZD7UP4er0UKA/s1600/more-scarves-027.jpg" height="254" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then when I wind back, I get my first look at my warp.<br />

I was going to call this--A SCARF A DAY-- but after 4 days, my back said to slow down. But let me tell you how difficult it is... The yarn is so beautiful! Thank you <a href="http://mountaincolors.com/" target="_blank">Mountain Colors</a>! <br />

I am sorry I don't have pictures of the Missoula Weavers Guild visits Mountain Colors. But I do have some of the results. So I actually dyed this warp (although I dyed it in a 100 gram skein and wound the warp after). <br />

Yes, you can make a 7" wide, 3 yard warp with one skein of Weavers Wool. Below are the 4 scarves I wove this week. <br />

<b> WHAT AN AMAZING WORKSHOP! </b><br />
<br />
I think it was my very best! <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikDQAnQWritm_M9ES0H9HNW-niMHOm6Kknah2gZm7YDcUKBBOwirGYikl9xXYSdIL743IcVFk53HuRE5v4F2g4qVytQymMoTPxUiICqtul6CiqiIHUP0cRwJDU0ox7Y5W_ZwZ1ylErbj8/s1600/Salt-Lake-Montage.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikDQAnQWritm_M9ES0H9HNW-niMHOm6Kknah2gZm7YDcUKBBOwirGYikl9xXYSdIL743IcVFk53HuRE5v4F2g4qVytQymMoTPxUiICqtul6CiqiIHUP0cRwJDU0ox7Y5W_ZwZ1ylErbj8/s1600/Salt-Lake-Montage.jpg" height="320" width="266" /></a><br />
<br />
Everyone arrived with their horoscope warps on the loom and ready to go.<br />
There were 15 students (my maximum), and what a great group of ladies!<br />
Sadly I didn't get good images of everyone at the loom ("good" is the operative word here)<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyIjOc1H_JsOCkDaEVUzUZOBAU4011ZXz7RxzOYs4eDS_oFkxSZpUxGsTv7TPkiydKklzUt3NUz-2Ggzx1WTsmj7SKVbdtN14oKwqJ2joDgTrKUigGzWQB4WeErAGbYuKCYqUvIGmeeoQ/s1600/Salt-Lake-complete.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyIjOc1H_JsOCkDaEVUzUZOBAU4011ZXz7RxzOYs4eDS_oFkxSZpUxGsTv7TPkiydKklzUt3NUz-2Ggzx1WTsmj7SKVbdtN14oKwqJ2joDgTrKUigGzWQB4WeErAGbYuKCYqUvIGmeeoQ/s1600/Salt-Lake-complete.jpg" height="320" width="255" /></a><br />
<br />
Usually one student completes their weaving, but 4 weavers completed their pieces during the workshop. The reason why everyone does not finish in the 3 days is because we are learning about Almost Ikat, Turned Weft Ikat, and Woven Words (3 workshops all at once). I will make another blog post featuring these aspects of the workshop, but my experience has been problematic when I try and download too many images. Yes, I know it is supposed to work, but all too often everything gets erased and I have to begin again. <br />
<br />
So I am smiling just looking at the <a href="http://www.mmawg.org/" target="_blank">Mary Meigs Atwater Weavers</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRtnt0XbcWFGWPG1SjsafrOKIbahgM2gktH-9kPepLtq2xT78TqzuDaGntHSg2uw_RJCD6TnGb-kSeZOWUeodqBN1XaN1jojHf7DaZNwDD9HqS3K73QEe0SGLF-IShToiL-pkvkrIIuzE/s1600/Salt-Lake-118.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRtnt0XbcWFGWPG1SjsafrOKIbahgM2gktH-9kPepLtq2xT78TqzuDaGntHSg2uw_RJCD6TnGb-kSeZOWUeodqBN1XaN1jojHf7DaZNwDD9HqS3K73QEe0SGLF-IShToiL-pkvkrIIuzE/s1600/Salt-Lake-118.jpg" height="140" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And, of course, the class is not complete for me until I make a VIRTUAL QUILT from a series of "warpies" (kind of like selfies)--- I am so grateful for opportunity to present this workshop. <br />
<br />

In case you haven't been following, this is my own horoscope woven in 8/2 Tencel. I love to experiment with weft colors and ended up using a variegated Tencel that gives and added dimension. I am wearing it as I write. I am loving that Tencel!<br />

Yes, it's true! I can weave without color. I call it clearing the palette. It is quite refreshing, actually. <br />
<br />
<br />
Many years ago, a lovey gentleman gave me 50 cashmere sweaters to recycle. In exchange I was to weave him scarves. I had woven him 3 scarves, but there was still one remaining. He wanted a gray and back herringbone. So FINALLY! I am on my way. It was pointed out to me that I was not actualy weaving herringbone, but rather zigzag. So long story---I looked up herringbone in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Handweavers-Pattern-Marguerite-Porter-Davison/dp/0960317201" target="_blank">"The Handweavers Pattern Book"</a> (I've had this book since 1960!) It was actually rather dusty since I only do plain weave (grin). So below is the actual herringbone. Now I am waiting to hear from the client which he prefers. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMQJuCPwy4uF0DP87Fo1EesZ1DMRYle0cj2LvFH45r3-MH8YihgBBs6szPG0Aw9cvTu1EvSdM4RjRY7GbemMK3c6SqzerPrsn0fgl-qzW95PNpcKpnwz7_89-hRoed7Z3ZSSLjOfq3x6I/s1600/9.28.14+herring+b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMQJuCPwy4uF0DP87Fo1EesZ1DMRYle0cj2LvFH45r3-MH8YihgBBs6szPG0Aw9cvTu1EvSdM4RjRY7GbemMK3c6SqzerPrsn0fgl-qzW95PNpcKpnwz7_89-hRoed7Z3ZSSLjOfq3x6I/s1600/9.28.14+herring+b.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Meanwhile on Grace I am finally weaving another rendition of my own horoscope, this time in tencel from WEBS (soon to be a new kit offering from<a href="http://www.cottonclouds.com/" target="_blank"> Cotton Clouds) </a><br />

Sometimes I believe the warps are better before they are woven, but not in this case. This particular horoscope weaving incites my "aura envy" (grin). <a href="http://www.yarn.com/" target="_blank">Webs Yarn</a> makes several variegated tencel colorways. My client selected <br />

After a rather long break, here is weaving going on the loom! And now I begin the season of Tencel, hopefully a fiber for all seasons. I'll have to weave at least a dozen pieces before I know enough about Tencel. I remember that I turned my nose up when I first heard about this yarn many years ago, and I said "I would never use Tencel". I should know by now that when I never...... I also wrote in my college weaving journal "I HATE STRIPES"<br />
<br />
This particular tencel comes from <a href="http://www.yarn.com/webs-weaving-spinning-weaving-yarns-fiber-tencel/webs-weaving-yarns-valley-yarns-82-tencel/" target="_blank">WEBS</a>. Hopefully I will be able to talk <a href="http://www.cottonclouds.com/shopping/kits.asp?cat=Weaving" target="_blank">Cotton Clouds</a> (who also carries this yarn) to make up Color Horoscope Weaving Kits, like they offer in Bambu 7 & 12). <br />

The way that bamboo yarn seems to be a bit "wooley", tencel is much more "silky". I had problems with tension on the first and second piece I did, but I take my time and think good thoughts. Now #4 and #5 (in picture) have been much better. <br />

I really like the colors in this horoscope. It makes me curious to see what my horoscope would look like in 8/2 tencel. I have had the recent pleasure of teaching beginning weaving to a wonderful group at <a href="http://www.livingartofmontana.org/" target="_blank">Living Art of Montana. .</a><br />
In a series of 4 classes, students created the pieces below. Upon completion, students were asked to write a paragraph starting with WEAVING IS.....<br />
Each student put a few words from their writing on a slip of paper. All slips of paper were placed in a bowl. I randomly selected the slips of paper in turn to create the following:<br />
<br />
<b>WEAVING IS...</b><br />
<b>AN EXPRESSION OF SELF INTRICATELY TWINED, MOVING TO AND FRO, EMBRACING PATIENCE</b><br />
<b> WEAVING CREATES TO LOVE AND DIE</b><br />
<b>TURNING LOOSE THREAD INTO FIRM FOUNDATIONS, BELIEVING THAT EFFORT AND DESIRE LEAD TO A CREATION OF USEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL UTILITY</b><br />
<b> WEAVING IS ...WEIRD---THE NEW THINGS YOU INVENT TO MAKE IT WORK...</b><br />
<b>A PRAYER IN COLOR AND TEXTURE</b><br />
<b> I SEE WOVEN THINGS EVERYWHERE!</b><br />
<b>RHYTHM, COLOR, BREATH, PRAYER, PATIENCE, PROCESS, CONNECTION, PATTERNS, TIME AND LOVE MADE MANIFEST</b><br />
<b> A SINGLE STRAND PASSING THROUGH</b><br />
<b>ON A LARGE SCALE, IT WARPS AROUND ONE'S BODY FOR WARTMTH. ON A SMALL SCALE, WEAVING WARMS THE SOUL</b><br />
<b> WHERE IS THE ME I WAS? </b><br />
<br />

I couldn't decide which image I liked the best, so here they all are. The Buddha was the only model I could find. Please<a href="http://weavingspirit.blogspot.com/2014/06/when-youre-hot-youre-hot-when-youre-not.html" target="_blank"> click here</a> for previous details of scarf.<br />

<br />
It has been a mighty long time since I've done anything on the computer except for hanging out on FB and nothing much on the loom. Sometimes our journeys take us in unexpected directions. So FINALLY I got out my purply and neutrally un-knitted cashmere and picked out 4 that worked for me. Better color below.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2wjpqwjbf9NwSM4ubOCcSTLABFxsKZ7yJrdjvLcSP4Ve_LeBXvbtaHxITTsNIprA3XTPPKVvYBQFYiblvzw5OLcoDQFGdkJ5R1050UtAVRBLbv06pnxzE9fzHcbDukRGMh-4JsVQ9FZI/s1600/After-not-weaving-031.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2wjpqwjbf9NwSM4ubOCcSTLABFxsKZ7yJrdjvLcSP4Ve_LeBXvbtaHxITTsNIprA3XTPPKVvYBQFYiblvzw5OLcoDQFGdkJ5R1050UtAVRBLbv06pnxzE9fzHcbDukRGMh-4JsVQ9FZI/s1600/After-not-weaving-031.jpg" height="300" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To test out some beautiful yarn I got from <a href="http://mountaincolors.com/index.html" target="_blank">Mountain Colors.</a> (some months ago) Most of their yarn is knitting yarn, but there is this Weaver's Wool. sett 12 epi. This is my first test scarf. I am very pleased so far. Almost Ikat works really well with their <a href="http://mountaincolors.com/colors/index.html" target="_blank">space-dyed yarn</a>. (well actually it is hand-painted.) I know this is true because I had the pleasure of visiting Diana and Leslie's wonderful dyeroom and observing how it's done. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijiFqu-L5Yr61RGSOnJ5sry6AzpbChDFOicItzVgbJdtmZp_N8z67JZX5Bln8ccelB5CLdiQYUQDjtoQ1QJxMpO3F74gqsbp8IvUrsTluMYcDVYM0ZpvUOazhajgpGYGVgA-UX823zAX0/s1600/After-not-weaving-034.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijiFqu-L5Yr61RGSOnJ5sry6AzpbChDFOicItzVgbJdtmZp_N8z67JZX5Bln8ccelB5CLdiQYUQDjtoQ1QJxMpO3F74gqsbp8IvUrsTluMYcDVYM0ZpvUOazhajgpGYGVgA-UX823zAX0/s1600/After-not-weaving-034.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I can't wait to feel how the cashmere combines with Weaver's Wool. I don't think this will be the only post about working with this yarn. I am taking it slow. <br />

Tomorrow is the First Friday opening at <a href="http://4ravensgallery.com/about" target="_blank">The 4 Ravens Gallery</a> in Missoula from 5-8 PM<br />
Below I am brewing up some lavender tea to serve at the opening. It amazes me to see how purple (or you could say "lavender") the water turns when in first contact with the lavender flowers. Soon after it turns a rose gold color.<br />

AGAIN AND STILL TIME PASSES--I riffle through the comodious cedar chest, selecting bits and samples of cloth woven in other times and places. Some of the fabrics date back 40 years. I've been saving them for something--as it turns out, it is to create 144 lavender pillows for an upcoming show THE POWER OF GATHERING OVER TIME opening May 2 at The<a href="https://www.facebook.com/4ravensgallery" target="_blank"> 4 Ravens Gallery</a> in downtown Missoula, Montana.<br />
<br />
Normally I would seek sewing assistance, but when my computer suffered a severe catatonic episode requiring a week long stay in the hospital---well, what's a body to do? Get out the sewing machine, iron, and cutting board and get into it! <br />

I got so into it! Each pillow became a tiny woven composition. I won't say that no two are alike, but pretty close. <br />

It was lots of fun and consisted of making a series of collages focusing on different aspects of the student's life and aspirations and then cutting the collages into strips and weaving them. Of course, I had to create my own woven collages for every class that I taught. I carefully saved them in a folder which I happened upon recently. Naturally I had to make a collage of the collages for an upcoming show.<br />
